Valencia is a planned community nestled in the city of Santa Clarita, with a population of 148,456 and an estimated median household income of $109,029. First planned in the 1960’s, Valencia is still expanding and is known for its mix of apartment buildings, shopping centers, office parks, and industrial warehouses. The city features an extensive network of pathways built over and under boulevards; these pathways are so wide-spread, it is possible to travel about the community without ever having set foot on the boulevard.
Valencia is divided in residential villages, each with its own unique lifestyle or catering a particular demographic, including Bridgeport, Copperhill, Fairways, Lakeshore, Northpark, Old Orchard, Rose Arbor, and Valencia Villa. Many of these villages feature a Neighborhood Watch program.
Newhall is the oldest district in Santa Clarita and was the first permanent Anglo settlement in the Valley. The city was named after businessman Henry Newhall and has been the location for many motion pictures such as Walt Disney Pictures’ “The World’s Greatest Athlete.”
Newhall is the home of the William S. Hart County Park and the titular actor’s former mansion, which is open for tours.
Santa Clarita occupies most of the Santa Clarita Valley, with about 52.8 square miles and a population of about 176,320. It is also ranked as the sixth safest city in the United States and the ranks 18 of the top 100 places to live. Due to its proximity to the Mojave Desert, Santa Clarita is warm and dry most of the year, with particularly arid summers and very little rainfall. It is also one of the top areas prone to wildfires.
To circumvent gang activity, the city has incorporated many youth-friendly activities, establishing and maintaining a comprehensive recreation program that includes an aquatic park with a bicycle/skate park, and several Olympic-sized park. There are also over 3,000 acres of open space and 32 miles of off-street trails. Santa Clarita does not have a police or fire department, which are serviced by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the LAC Fire Department.
